Excessive Heat Warning

Statement as of 3:17 PM CDT on July 21, 2017

Expires 9:00 PM EDT on July 22, 2017

... Excessive heat warning remains in effect until 8 PM CDT
Saturday...

* heat index values... up to 110 due to temperatures in the low to mid
90s... and dewpoints in the mid to upper 70s.

* Timing... through Saturday evening.

* Impacts... increased risk for heat exhaustion or heat stroke
for people spending time outside or living without air
conditioning. Children and the elderly are most susceptible.
Also, parked vehicles will become dangerously hot within
minutes.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of
dangerously hot temperatures and high humidity will occur. This
combination will lead to a dangerous situation in which heat
illnesses are likely. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-
conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and
neighbors, especially the elderly.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when
possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and
health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks
in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by
heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke
is an emergency, call 9 1 1.

Public Information Statement

Statement as of 11:48 AM CDT on July 21, 2017

Expires 7:00 PM EDT on July 21, 2017

Severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening across
the area.

Thunderstorms are expected to be fast-moving this afternoon and
evening, which means you will have less time than usual to act,
and every second will count. Do not wait to hear thunder or see
the storm. Go immediately to a sturdy structure when a warning is
issued!

Now is the time to prepare for storms. If you intend to move
vehicles or other property into shelter, do it now. This
is also the time to move pets or livestock to shelter as
needed.

Remember that a watch means conditions are favorable for severe
weather. It is your head's up that severe weather is possible in
the next several hours. A warning means that severe weather is
occurring or about to occur very shortly and that you need to
take immediate action to protect your life.

Whether you are at work, home, school, or anywhere else, identify
your safe area now and be alert for warnings. The safest place to
be during a tornado or extreme storm is in a sturdy structure
away from windows in the basement or on the lowest floor in an
interior room such as a bathroom or closet.

If you are in a Mobile home, camping, or outdoors, you should
consider going to a sturdy structure long before the storms
arrive.

When a warning is issued or severe weather threatens, immediately
seek shelter inside a sturdy building away from windows. If a
tornado is possible, go to the safe area in the building
immediately!

If you hear outdoor warning sirens, first go to your safe area,
then seek more information.
